Immune (2003) Solid State Records HMM Rank: ![]()
My primary complaint with this album is its repetitiveness. The lack of variety in both musical style and song structure made this quite a boring listen. All of the songs are comprised of mid tempo, mosh-pit inducing riffs reminiscent of Hatebreed and occasional thrashy moments that have a sort of a Witchery-ish feel to them. The vocals are mainly death/black metal screams accompanied by clean vocals, which are mainly used during more melodic chorus moments. This brings up yet another problem: How many times have you seen the past 2 sentences used to describe a new death metal band? For me, far too many. The band brings nothing new to the table, which normally doesn't bother me as long as the songwriting skills make up for the lack of originality (the "who cares if it's been done before if it's being done well?" theory), but as I've stated before, the songwriting is also lacking. It sounds like the bands primary intention when writing these songs was to write whatever would start a mosh-pit, and then throw in a clean vocal chorus for good measure. One slightly comical thing I noticed about the album was that some of it actually sounds like pro-wrestler entrance music (about 10 seconds into track six I pictured the Undertaker riding his motorcycle up to the wrestling ring and spitting water into the air as he jumped over the ropes). While the musicianship also isn't the best I've ever heard, I did manage to catch some interesting instrumental moments during my short listen (the album is only 38 minutes long). For example, I thought that the on beat/off beat thing between the guitar and the drums at the beginning of the first track was pretty cool. However, occasional moments like this weren't enough to undo the overall boredom this disc unleashed on me. To sum it up, buying this disc would be a good idea if you are just looking for something to put on while you and your friends headbang and throw each other into walls. On the other hand, if you are looking for creativity, you won't find it here. Maybe I'm just being biased because the nu-metal influence on this disc is a little too much for me to handle, but hopefully you didn't see this review as just random bashing and actually have an idea of what this album is like.
