Hailing from the ultra-remote Faröe Islands, Týr is one of those bands that defies categorization into one of the multitude of sub-genres that exist within heavy metal today. If one were to try, though, you'd probably end up with something like epic progressive viking folk metal. The highly talented musicians of Týr got together in 1998 with the idea of making metal music based upon the Norse, Danish, and Irish history and culture of their homeland while at the same time honoring their Black Sabbath and Dream Theater influences. Their debut album How Far To Asgaard was a solid example of progressive power metal with folk-inspired lyrics, but with Eric The Red Týr have created a masterpiece. A change in the line-up saw guitarist and co-founder Heri Joensen assume the vocal duties and this alone is an improvement. What's truly remarkable is the use of Faroese melodies and language to create unique and accessible metal. Fans of the styles of metal I mentioned above, plus those who enjoy Gothic, doom, and even black metal will find Týr to be an interesting band.
