Type O Negative   Origin: Brooklyn, NY     This page updated 07.17.03   Since mainman Pete Steele formed Type O Negative in 1990 after the collapse of his previous band Carnivore, the bands unique style of Gothic Metal has come to be considered the bar by which all other bands of the genre are measured. Though their first two albums retained much of the thrashy punk of Carnivore, Bloody Kisses saw Steele's vampiric baritone lead the band to their identity and catapult them to commercial success - the album went both Gold and Platinum, a first for Roadrunner Records. This album, as well as the follow-up October Rust, stand as the twin peaks of Type O's career thus far and are highly recommended both to fans of the genre and those who wish to hear what the band is all about. Steele was dealing with some very heavy personal issues during the recording of World Coming Down, resulting in the bleakest album in their catalog. Though not nearly as accessible as the previous two albums, World Coming Down sees the band strip away their usual sarcastic self-abasement and offers a glimpse of the demons haunting Steele at that time. The latest release, Life Is Killing Me, finds a comfortable ground between Bloody Kisses and October Rust, lightening things up a bit in classic Type O Negative style.
