Origin: Finland     This page updated 07.12.05   Sentenced is a member of a group of Scandinavian death/black metal bands that have, over the course of their careers, evolved their style into a more atmospheric Goth sound which leaves little trace of their roots. Formed in 1989, Sentenced began playing generic death metal of the period. Changing labels after the release of Shadows Of The Past, the band refined their sound and incorporated the Gothenburg-style of death metal into their sophomore effort. Amok heralded a more distinctive change in Sentenced's musical direction, as their style took on a more melodic metal approach with Taneli Jarva's vocals sung cleanly, just bordering on his previous death metal growls. Although finding commercial success with the release of Amok, and perhaps because of it, Taneli left the band and was replaced by current vocalist Ville Laihiala. Down was released to excellent reviews and is considered by many, myself included, to be Sentenced's best album to date. Musically still within the atmospheric dark metal style, Ville's clean baritone fit the somber mood of the music perfectly. Follow-up albums drifted more towards a Goth rock/metal sound, comparable perhaps to a watered down Type O Negative, but definately not on the same level as Down or even Amok. Their next release, The Cold White Light, continued in the same vein as the two previous recordings but manages to blend the Goth-pop and hard rock elements more successfully. The appropriately titled The Funeral Album marks the end of the line for Sentenced, as the band has decided to dissolve at what they consider to be the high point of their careers. Fans of The Gathering, Amorphis, Tiamat, and Paradise Lost will be able to relate to Sentenced's evolution and appreciate their style of metal.
