Poison   Origin: Harrisburg, PA     This page updated 10.27.02   Often hailed as the kings of '80s Hair Metal, Poison pretty much defined the genre in their heyday. Rocketed to the top of the charts with their anthemic choruses, ultra-melodic power ballads, and lyrical content fixated on sex, partying, and more sex, their brand of L.A. sleaze became a staple of radio with multiple hit singles. After the success of Flesh & Blood, which has what I believe to be their best song - "Ride The Wind", the band unfortunately found itself on the verge of extinction. Guitarist C.C. Deville's drug and alchohol battles were well-publicised, and after an infamous performance on live television he was summarily expelled from the band. Would-be guitar hero Richie Kotzen (also from Pennsylvania) was recruited to record Native Tongue and actually co-wrote the albums two singles. Even though the album was successful, the grunge explosion shifted fan direction away and the band began to fade from the limelight. Kotzen was ejected and replaced by Blues Saraceno, but their Crack A Smile effort was shelved by the label and a greatest hits collection released instead. Saraceno returned to his solo career and the rest of the band pursued side projects and other media outlets. But in 1999 Bret and C.C. patched up their relationship and Poison was born again. Their triumphant return tour was kicked off right here in Detroit to a sold out crowd, and continued uphill from there. Crack A Smile was finally released, as well as another semi-new album, before returning to the studio to record Hollyweird. Hollyweird combines elements from their early years, almost as if this were a follow-up to Flesh & Blood, yet adds a much more mature outlook on life through lyrics dealing with personal issues faced by Bret, C.C., and the band.
