Founded in 1990 by Fredrik Mannberg, the band first came into existence as a Death Metal outfit named Necromonic. Although cutting a demo, the members of the band felt compelled to explore a more Euro-power Metal sound. A flux in the lineup occured, and thus was born Nocturnal Rites.
The band has maintained its core twin-guitar Power Metal sound throughout their releases, joining groups such as Hammerfall, Nevermore, and Angel Dust in the genres elite. Vocalist Anders Zackrisson departed after The Sacred Talisman and was duly replaced by Jonny Linqvist, who brought to the band a grittier vocal style. Though Nocturnal Rites occupies a slot in one of the most crowded genres of metal today, they manage to remain heavy, intense, and (most importantly) fresh.
