Formed in 1998 by brothers Robert and Patric Tindvall, the musical direction of In Vain was at first grounded in slow-paced doom similar to that plied by early Anathema. Their debut album Serenades of the Wretched, however, retains only a slight hint of their early influences. One could describe the band now as similar to, but heavier and more guitar-driven than, modern hard rock bands such as Nickelback and Creed. Still, fans of doom-inspired music would do well to investigate In Vain.
