Origin: Florida     This page updated 12.02.06   Founded in the mid-'80s as Purgatory, Iced Earth has grown to be counted among the elite of American power metal bands. Influenced heavily by bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Iced Earth blends classic metal elements with modern production and aggression to forge a unique sound that has continued to win fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Led by guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer, the band has undergone several line-up changes over the years. The most significant came in 2003, when long time vocalist Matt barlow departed to pursue a career in criminal justice. Leaving with him was lead guitarist Larry Tarnowski, who'd been with the band since the late '90s. Replacing Barlow was none other than Tim "Ripper" Owens, who's debut on The Glorious Burden tossed aside any idea that the band would suffer from the loss of Matt. Characterized by driving riffs and powerful vocals, Iced Earth is a band for any fan of aggressive power metal. A significant lineup change again impacted the band when, during touring support of The Glorious Burden, drummer Richard Christy resigned from the band (and the music industry in general) to pursue a career as a comedian on The Howard Stern Show. Erstwhile Halford skinman Bobby Jarzombek replaced Christy to allow the tour to continue, though he too has been replaced by former touring drummer Brent Smedley.
