Origin: Finland     This page updated 01.21.07   Finntroll - the name says it all. A band from Finland who base their music on Scandanavian troll folklore, simple enough. Finntroll are anything but simple, however, and can probably be considered one of the most complex and eccentric metal bands on the scene today. Combining Black Metal with elements of folk, classic metal, and Power Metal, these guys show a remarkable ability to derive a listenable sound from influences that would on the surface seem to be mutually exclusive. This has been done before, of course, by bands such as Waylander, Elvenking, and others, but Finntroll have carved out a unique niche for themselves in the world of extreme folk metal. Founded in 1997 by singer Katia and guitarist Somnium, the band has stayed pretty true to their core sound thoughout their career, straying only on the experimental/acoustic experiment Visor Om Slutet. The lineup changed recently, however, when Katia was forced to resign due to medical reasons and Somnium perished in a tragic accident. With both founding members gone, the band surges forward with Nattfödd and shows no signs of slowing down. Fans of the folk metal bands mentioned above should give Finntroll a try, and Black Metal fans with an open mind are advised to do so as well.
