One of the most influential bands of hard rock and heavy metal history, Deep Purple helped shaped the future of heavy music in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Their riff from "Smoke On The Water" is perhaps the most recognized, though they have had several single and album hits throughout their lenghty career. The band has such a storied history that I could not hope to do them justice on these humble pages, so I will offer only a brief overview of the band and list their major releases. Formed in 1968, the core lineup would continue on through the mid-'70s before suffereing a period of stagnation. Many compilations, singles, and live albums were released during this period but the band returned in 1984 to release a couple of solid albums before once again disintegrating. Returning again in the '90s, Deep Purple struggled to recapture their commercial success as they released some subpar albums before once again finding themselves again with their latest album Rapture Of The deep. Though a good album, my favorites from the band will remain Machine Head and Perfect Strangers.
