Bel O Kan, named after the megalithic ant colony in Bernard Werber's Empire of the Ants, was formed in 2001 near Lyon, France. The original lineup lasted less than a year, but in 2002 reformed with new members and eventually recorded their demo Ant Symphonia. The band plays a style of symphonic power metal that relies very heavily on keyboard atmospheres, though the guitars are integral to the mix. Maryline, the frontwoman on Ant Symphonia, has left the band and has been replaced by another female vocalist. The music is, thus far, very unpolished but the band does have potential to be a solid contributor to the genre.
